Exam Generator FAQ: Turn Your Study Materials into Practice Questions
Upload a document, get a practice exam. The Exam Generator turns your study materials - lecture notes, textbooks, handouts - into practice questions you can solve online or export. Here are common questions about the feature, answered as of October 2026.
What does the Exam Generator do?
You provide source material, and the Exam Generator writes exam-style questions from it, complete with answers. You can solve the questions right on the page or export them as a document.
Choose the subject, question type, and number of questions, then review the generated answers against your source material.
Which file types can I upload?
The uploader accepts PDF, DOCX, HWP/HWPX, and PNG/JPG images. You can also paste text directly.
ZIP archives are not supported. Extract the archive and upload a supported document or image. HWP and HWPX files are converted before generation.
Can I paste text instead of uploading a file?
Yes. If your material is already in text form, you can paste it directly - up to 12,000 characters - instead of uploading a document.
My file will not upload. What should I do?
- Check the format. Only PDF, DOCX, HWP/HWPX, and PNG/JPG are accepted; other formats, including ZIP archives, are rejected.
- Extract archives first. If your material is inside a ZIP, unzip it and upload the documents inside.
- Check readability. For scans and photos, make sure the text is sharp and easy to read before uploading.
Can I edit the generated questions?
Yes. You can review and edit the generated questions before exporting them, so the final exam matches what you want to use in class or for study.
Do the answers show where they came from?
When a generated answer includes a source reference, use it to find the relevant passage in your material. Review the passage and the answer together; generated references and answers can contain mistakes.
Can I export the generated exam?
Yes. Exams can be exported as HWP, PDF, or DOCX. You can export questions, answers, or both. Review the exported file before printing, particularly equations, images, and complex tables.
How do I get better questions?
- Upload readable source text. Scanned pages work through image upload, but make sure the text in your document or photo is easy to read.
- Stay on topic. Questions come from your material, so a focused document gives focused questions.
- Check before you print. Generated questions are a study aid. Review answers against your source material before using them in a class.
